Living in Macau since the age of four, João Jorge Magalhães developed a curiosity around the way Chinese and Western cultures interact with each other in the old Portuguese outpost. Walking through its streets and alleys, during the years he allows his experience with the Macanese to imprint on his mind. The nostalgic fragments of an “old Macau” continue to Inspire him to create. Thorough his artistic eyes, one finds rich colours, multi-layered composition, detailed expressions and abstract black and white patterns, in his lively representation of Macau.

João Jorge Magalhães’ artwork is visually attractive. His works are under the sugar coating of the joyful, also question the society by his own means, leading its viewer to self-reflect upon lives. Perhaps, this is the way to spend the last respect to the disappearing village.
